This week we interviewed Gareth from our studio team, who has worked for Kanga for 9+ years. In this Kanga Life feature, Gareth tells us about what he likes about his role and what a typical day looks like for him.

What is your role at Kanga Health?
Studio Assistant
What enticed you to become a Studio Assistant at Kanga?
When I joined the team, Kanga was a fairly small company, and I liked the quaint, tight knit feel. Several years on, it has still retained that same feeling of togetherness and community that I joined for.
How is Kanga different from your previous workplaces?
One of the main differences is that the idea of hierarchy seems far more broken down. Nobody is creating something in a specific way to appease an unreasonable manager or an arrogant senior designer – there simply are none of these characters! Instead, it feels much more like a group of like-minded people all working together to make a real impact on healthcare.
How would you describe the Kanga team?
It’s basically one big family. We all have respect and admiration for each other and aren’t afraid to challenge each other when needed. I’ve never worked in an environment where people care for the other employees so much. It really gives you a sense that you’re part of something.
What is your typical working day like?
My days generally pan out as a variety of dozens of overlapping tasks. One day I might be editing the subtitles in hundreds of videos, the other I might be creating a website from scratch. Every single day is different in its own way.
So, how do you manage a healthy work-life balance?
I find it’s always important to have a clear separation of work and life. When I clock off, I don’t check my emails, I don’t think about the work that’s coming tomorrow. When I’m having free time, work is all but a distant memory.
What does Kanga do to encourage flexibility amongst the team?
Getting everyone involved in all aspects of a project is something we have always done very well. When I finish a piece of work, I don’t just feel like I have just followed a brief to complete a piece of work for a project that I know nothing about. We all make sure that everyone involved in a project fully understands it and is able to see their work in context.
What would be the one thing you’d say about Kanga Health to potential candidates?
Kanga was my first job, and I’ve never needed another. I am unfamiliar to the qualms that most people seem to have about work. To me, work is just spending time with lovely people, doing work that I’m passionate about, and making a positive impact on the healthcare industry.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I believe spending time with friends in pretty much any capacity is always the best way to spend your time, whether it’s out on a walk, playing a board game, going to the pub etc. Personally, I love jamming with my more musical friends.
Money or happiness?
Happiness
Would you rather travel to the past or to the future?
Future
Hot or cold weather?
Cold
Finish the phrase “the way to my heart is…”
…being kind to people who work in hospitality.
